The word acolyte comes from the Greek word akolouthos. It means one who attends or assists a leader. In Lutheran churches, acolytes assist the pastor by lighting candles, collecting offering plates and communion cups, and other duties as necessary. They are vital participants in worship. At FULC children can begin being an acolyte in the third or fourth grade, depending on the individual. The child will first be given training outside of worship time and then during worship with an experienced acolyte.
